Der Wilde Weg

Schleiden

The “Wilde Weg” is a 1.5 kilometre-long nature discovery path in the Eifel National Park.

Due to the short length and the ten interactive stations along the way, the path is an exciting activity for children in particular. But of course, visitors of all ages can find out about the wilderness, the development of the forests and the wide variety of animals and plants in the Eifel National Park here.

You also experience how storms affect a forest, can test your strength on a climbing course or feel like a scientist in a research station. A 210 m-long wooden path leads through the forest wilderness, giving visitors new perspectives and insights into the natural world. Visitors can enter into a tunnel - in the form of a tree trunk lying on the ground - to find out more about different types of animal and the ways in which they use old and dead wood. Elsewhere, life-size steel silhouettes of animals demonstrate how they influence the development of the forest.

The path is part of the barrier-free “Wilder Kermeter” nature experience area, and is therefore also suitable for parents with prams. The Kermeter is one of the largest uninterrupted forested regions in North Rhine-Westphalia and as a Natura2000 area enjoys a special protected status beyond that of a normal national park.

The barrier-free nature experience area can be reached via the “Kermeter-Hochstrasse” (L15) between Schleiden-Gemünd/-Wolfgarten and Heimbach-Schwammenauel.
The GPS coordinates of the barrier-free parking space for cars and tourist buses are N50° 36.975667 E6° 26.146167.

Modern, comfortable, close to nature – welcome to the new youth hostel Gemünd Vogelsang. A learning and event venue that sets entirely new standards opened in spring 2020 at the popular location of the old youth hostel Schleiden-Gemünd.

Nestled in a valley rich in forest and water, in the Eifel National Park, the building with its impressive wooden façade and large transparent window areas fits perfectly into the surrounding nature. The youth hostel is one of the certified national park hosts and is thus the ideal base for numerous outdoor activities.

School classes not only learn a lot about the Eifel National Park and its animal and plant life in Gemünd Vogelsang, but they also benefit from the proximity to the "International Place Vogelsang". The 100-hectare site of the former NS-Ordensburg Vogelsang is now a modern extracurricular learning and cultural event venue. Therefore, cooperation with the "International Place Vogelsang" for school trip offers is even stronger than before. Program offerings around the themes of tolerance, respect, and prevention are supplemented by historically political programs and components.

Choirs, music, and conference groups appreciate exclusive work opportunities with nature-oriented after-work experiences at the youth hostel Gemünd Vogelsang.

Thanks to the unique location on the edge of the village and forest, the new youth hostel Gemünd Vogelsang is also very attractive for families and those seeking relaxation. In addition to hiking and cycling tours, the surrounding area offers many more recreational opportunities: boat trips on the Rur, ranger-guided tours through the national park, and excursions to various destinations such as the visitor mine Rescheid, the wildlife enclosure Hellenthal, or the open-air museum Kommern.
